IEMA: Shaping the Future - UK Environmental Principles and Governance Bill

As the UK leaves the EU, it is vital that environmental protections are retained and not in any way diminished. Although the UK Government has stated a long-term ambition to enhance the environment over a generation, the mechanisms and legal framework to secure this simply aren’t in place.

The proposals from Government for a new Environmental Principles and Governance Bill are a starting point, but don’t go far enough to even maintain the status quo.

However, it would be a mistake for the current debate on environmental policy and legislation to be framed solely in the context of existing EU protections, despite their importance to the profession. We need to be far more ambitious if we’re to truly to embed environmental responsibility across all aspects of society and the economy. To do this, we need to have a clear sense of the governing framework that will secure the long-term goals in the 25yr environment plan, and make a truly positive impact in enhancing natural capital over the next generation.

To achieve this, we’re working to clarify the case for a bold, decisive, and ambitious new Environment Act that goes well beyond legislating for the status quo.
