It aims to protect game birds by establishing a close season. During this season, game can not be legally taken. It also established a requirement to obtain a game license to take game legally, although this requirement was removed in England and Wales in 2007.
The Act designates red grouse, black grouse, pheasant and partridge as game birds and also specifies their open season, which is a season during which the birds can be shot.
