National Assembly for Wales

Introduction
The National Assembly for Wales was established on 1 July 1999 by the Government of Wales Act 1998. This was followed by the National Assembly for Wales (Transfer of Functions) Order SI 1999/672, which transferred most of the responsibilities from Secretary of State for Wales to the Assembly. The Secretary of State for Wales remains a position within the Cabinet under the newly formed Office of the Secretary of State for Wales, but the responsibility is mainly to liaise with the National Assembly for Wales, Parliament and the Cabinet.
