Introduction
A breakthrough came with the establishment of the Northern Ireland Assembly under the Belfast Agreement, on 10 April 1998, which is commonly known as the 'Good Friday Agreement'. A referendum held on 22 May 1998 saw a majority vote in favour of the Agreement and the new Assembly was constituted.
